Twin
"Trick or Treat!"
My identical twin sister and I were born on
Halloween in 1964, four minutes apart. Audrey was
born first, and I came second. Therefore, she was
the "trick" and I was the "treat!"
We weighed in at four pounds each, arriving six
weeks early. My mother named Audrey, after Audrey
Hepburn, and my father named me, Heidi, (a German
name because we were born in Germany).
We were "army brats." My father was serving in the
army a married my mother, a beautiful young German
woman. They had been married two years before our
birth. We were affectionately called "Pumpkin," by
our father.
A lot of our birthday parties were costume parties
and we always had pumpkin pie for birthday cake -
our favorite!
When we were in the third grade, our little friends
talked us into playing a "trick" on our teachers. We
had the pod set-up at grade school (one big area
divided into four classrooms). Audrey and I switched
seats after recess one day, and were in classrooms
diagonal from each other.
Audrey's teacher asked me a question on a subject I
had not taken yet (the classes rotated during the
day on different lessons). All of the kids were
giggling, watching the "big switch-a-roo" in action.
Startled that the teacher had called upon me, I
giggled nervously, got up, and walked over to my
assigned seat and Audrey went back to hers.
The teachers and children laughed at the little
prank and we enjoyed the attention.
We pulled another "trick" in high school, this one
involving dates we had for a Saturday night. We were
18 years old and best friends with another set of
identical twins, who were 17 years old. Their names
were Karen and Kelly. I had a date with Marty, a guy
I had seen a few times already, and Kelly had a date
with Frank, and it was their second date.
Karen and Audrey answered the door when our dates
arrived, and pretended to be "Kelly and Heidi" ready
to go out. My date sat down and visited with Audrey,
kind of confused at why she was there. (Kelly and I
were hiding behind the wall divider, watching this
all play out.)
Frank, Kelly's date, suddenly, after a brief
conversation, leaned over to kiss Karen hello, and
that's when Karen freaked out and leaned back to
sway away from the kiss, saying, "Oh no, I'm
Karen." Kelly and I came around the wall divider
into the front room and claimed our confused dates,
laughing hysterically.
We didn't fool Marty but we sure got Frank good! It
was so funny, and a great story to tell all of our
friends!
Audrey and I are 42 years old now and we're still
best friends; closer than close - always have been,
always will be. And we do still have a few "tricks"
up our sleeves!
